KAI (Wellingborough, Northants) ![]() Yesterday we lost our last GSD, Kai. He was found millennium eve 2000, by the local dog warden, thrown out, he was traumatised and terrified, his age then was around 6-7 months. Fortunately for him he was taken to Maxicare - death row dogs, who never put dogs down, as he was very disabled, having awful feet, and was made (I quote the vet) of "india rubber" as all his tendons seemed to be loose, nothing could be done for those feet. It was too late, probably that why he was thrown out. He literally walked on his ankles. We took him on in the April of 2000, the vet judged his age to be around a year. Lord knows what had happened to him, he had never been inside a house as everything scared him, he adored my husband but it took 4 YEARS for him to really accept me and to stop showing his teeth everytime I went near him, he adored my husband, but didn't trust me a woman, so what some woman had done to him, God alone knows. Fortunately I have worked all my dogs and trained them in obedience, as well as taught in class, so thankfully he came to a skilled GSD owner. I must say though he never ever bit anyone, and lived happily if hagridden! with his two best friends Hannah a GSD (rescued) and Poppy a small black Labrador (rescued) both unfortunately now PTS, so we got him Holly who is a quart pint of a dog a real little mini, also rescued. He adored her. And she him. Kai was coddled and treasured, he was on borrowed time we knew, it would surely be his feet that in the end would let him down finally. Sunday evening he was a bit poorly, was a bit sick and quiet. Monday morning he went down the garden, and didn't want to come back in, just wanted to lie there, but it was cold and damp, so no way, it took me ages to get him back in the warm. I went shopping, left him snug in his bed, said bye bye to him gave him a kiss and left. When I came home, he was dead. Why? how? who knows. We are devastated, we knew we would not have him much longer, but never expected to have been relieved of that dreadful decision, Kai, bless him, decided to go at the time of his own choosing, he went as he had lived the perfect gentleman. We loved that funny guy to bits and will miss him for as long as we may live, he has gone to join all 7 of my other GSD's. May you have fun chasing the rabbits Kai. Luv you Mum and Boss man |
